What are Conspiracy Theories?

The definition of Conspiracy, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is:

  • a secret plan made by two or more people to do something that is harmful or illegal
  • the act of secretly planning to do something that is harmful or illegal

Conspiracy theory is defined by Wikipedia as:  an explanatory hypothesis that accuses two or more persons, a group, or an organization of having caused or covered up, through secret planning and deliberate action, an event or situation which is typically taken to be illegal or harmful.  Although the term “conspiracy theory” has acquired a derogatory meaning over time and is often used to dismiss or ridicule beliefs in conspiracies, it has also continued to be used to refer to actual, proven conspiracies.

The term “conspiracy theory” is frequently used by scholars and in popular culture to identify secret military, banking, or political actions aimed at stealing power, money, or freedom, from “the people”.
